Kanonkop (Elsenburg)

January 27th, 2008

Kanonkop StellenboschThis beautiful farm got its name from canons that were mounted on the mountain overlooking the farm. The canons were used when ships entered Table Bay to inform farmers of the ships arrival to take their produce to Cape Town to sell to the visiting ships.

This farm was later bought by the late Paul Sauer and late Danie Rossouw. Rossouw was the wine maker and produced very good red and white wines that were sold in bulk to KWV for blending and bottling.

Later Boland Coetzee became the wine maker and produced very good Pinotage and Cabernet wines. He left Kanonkop when Paul Sauer died, and started his own wine estate with excellent results.

Paul Sauer was minister of Transport in the 1948 cabinet of Dr. Malan;
Danie Rossouw married one of the Smit girls of Silvermine; and
Boland Coetzee was the great rugby hero of Western Province and the Springboks
