ATHLONE is a suburb of Cape Town in the South Eastern Suburbs to the south of the N2 highway, named after Alexander Cambridge – 1st Earl of Athlone who was Governor-General of the Union of South Africa from 1924 to 1930.
Well known landmarks of the area are the Athlone Stadium and the old coal burning Athlone Power Station (Athlone Towers); and also the Trojan Horse Memorial (a memorial to the 3 youth who were killed and all the other young people in Athlone who had died or been injured in the struggle for liberation).
Athlone is largely a residential suburb – that includes the areas Crawford, Belgravia, Gatesville, Hazendal, amongst others – and includes an industrial area (Athlone Industria 1 & 2) and thriving commercial areas (Athlone CBD and Gatesville).
